چکیده

Provided that the data show that a compound is safe, it is the primary efficacy analysis that determines whether the compound is approved. The secondary analyses support, clarify and confirm, but only one prospectively planned efficacy analysis can be primary in support of an effectiveness claim for a given trial. Why should this be so? And how can we design the trial and set up the primary efficacy analysis to get the best chance of confirming efficacy? The object of this chapter is to explain, in a simple but concrete way, the theoretical ideas behind the primary efficacy analysis. Many people treat statistics as mumbo–jumbo, but they don’t have to. There are commonsense reasons behind statistical ideas. While one might be impatient to get beyond the concepts and quickly arrive at the bottom line, this hurry is a mistake. Using statistical concepts thoughtfully can mean major (possibly multi–million dollar in a large study) savings in the study design and, much more importantly, can make the difference in turning a clinically beneficial compound into an approved and marketable reality.

Valid Prior-Free Probabilistic Inference and its Applications in Medical Statistics

Valid, prior-free, and situation-specific probabilistic inference is desirable for serious uncertain inference, especially in bio-medical statistics. This chapter∗ introduces such an inferential system, called the Inferential Model (IM) framework, proposed recently. IMs do not require a prior to be specified, yet they produce probabilistic inferential results that have desireable frequency prop...

Descriptive statistics and graphical displays.

Statistics is a broad mathematical discipline dealing with techniques for the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of numerical data. Data are information used for reasoning, discussion, or calculation; data are the foundation of modern scientific inference. Data may be obtained by a formal sampling procedure, by recording responses to experimental conditions, or by observing ...

All those concerned with the decision-making, they take better decisions when they use all the available information with practical and interpretable way. Statistics provide methods for data collection and analysis to support the decision-making. Statistics is the Science of collection, analysis and interpretation of observed data reported in attributes of natural or social phenomena. Utilizati...

From the descriptive towards inferential statistics: hundred years since conception of the Student's t-distribution.

It is crucially important to differentiate between the descriptive statistics on one side and inferential, inductive, mathematical statistics on the other. Only the latter is useful for obtaining the optimal information and for making effective decisions under conditions of uncertainty, because it defines probabilities of conclusions. That, of course, gains the real importance only in situation...
